The painting, Dutch Burger, came into fruition during a residency in the Netherland. At the time, I was wrestling with the gravitas of historic Dutch painting. I have always admired this period, especially the Vanitas paintings, and felt the subject suited my interests in my mortality and existential angst, which I use as fodder for much of my work. I thought it would be appropriate to make a kind of "everything and the kitchen sink" sort of Dutch painting, since I was consuming so much of this work on my visit. The burger became a metaphor for my own consumption.
